Specialty Pharmacy FAQs

Common questions

What is a specialty medication?

Specialty medications are prescribed for complex, chronic, and rare conditions for many different disease states, including oncology, neurology, and inflammatory conditions. They have specific storage, dispensing, and care requirements. These medications can be challenging to take if they need to be administered by injection or infusion. Some specialty medications may also cause certain side effects that require close monitoring. Due to these challenges, it is best to fill specialty medications under the supervision of highly trained pharmacists at a specialty pharmacy. Azina Specialty Pharmacy’s team of experts is here to help you understand your medications and manage your treatment journey.

How is a specialty pharmacy different than a retail pharmacy?

Specialty pharmacies are dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcome from your therapy. Some of the things we do include:

    • Enrolling you in a patient management program.
    • Ensuring you have access to your medication without any gaps in therapy. This includes:
      • Contacting you to schedule delivery of the medication.
      • Assisting with prior authorizations.
      • Helping find financial assistance.
      • Partnering with you and your provider to achieve therapy treatment goals through our patient management program.
      • Providing you with a thorough review of your medication that includes getting an accurate listing of your current prescriptions and screening for drug interactions.

How do I obtain my prescription?

To begin your treatment, your provider will send your prescription directly to Azina Specialty Pharmacy. We will quickly fill your prescription so you can begin treatment as soon as possible. You can pick up your medication from the pharmacy in person, or we can ship it to your home for free. Our team will call you to let you know when it is time for a refill. We work to make your therapy journey as convenient as possible.

How do I pay for my prescription?

Specialty medications can be expensive. Our staff is here to help you navigate prescription insurance and manage medication costs. We will call your insurance provider to confirm your benefits. We will also monitor financial assistance programs for you. Once we find available options, we will review them with you and help you enroll in any applicable program. Our team will ensure you have plenty of information to manage copay costs.

What type of care do I receive throughout my treatment?

Our pharmacists are an extension of your care team. We are here to educate you on your medication, so you know what to expect. Our clinical experts will explain storage, schedules, dosing, interactions, and potential side effects. If you have a question about your care, you can call our 24/7 support line at any time for answers. We update your provider on your progress, so they can closely monitor your treatment. Azina Specialty Pharmacy works alongside your provider to help you feel better and recover stronger.

How do I order a refill? Will you automatically send it to me?

A pharmacy technician will call you to schedule your delivery at least a week before your next refill. During this call, we will confirm that you are still taking the medication, that your prescriber has not changed the dose, and that you are not having any unmanageable side effects. Please call us if you need your medication sooner.
